Manage Stress & Anxiety
Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions. Everyone acts differently to stressful situations. Stress during the COVID-19 can include:
- Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
- Changes in sleep or eating patterns
- Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
- Worsening or chronic health problems
- Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
Anxiety can be healthy. Anxiety has a purpose: It alerts us to potential threats and helps us move toward safety. Feeling some anxiety right now is a normal reaction to the emerging news about the coranavirus. Channel your discomfort into useful action.
Things you can do to support yourself:
- Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
- Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.
- Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
- Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
- Support others – shift your attention J
- Go outside in nature (but continue social distancing)
- Try to keep up with regular routines. Create a schedule for learning, relaxing, and fun activities.
- When we fixate on dangers, anxiety grows, and when we turn our attention elsewhere, it shrinks.
