Lester B. Pearson Scholarship
Each year a Level II student is selected to attend Pearson College, a United World College, in Victoria, BC. The value of the scholarship is approximately $34,000 annually and covers the cost of attending the college to complete the two- year program.
We are looking for the next UWC scholars from across Canada who will attend Pearson College and the other 16 UWC schools around the world. Do you know a curious, intelligent, determined 15 or 16-year-old who would like to finish high school and get an IB Diploma with students from over 80 countries? When we ask students and alumni how they found out about UWC and why they applied, the most frequent answer we hear is that someone, usually a teacher, counsellor, coach, or principal, tapped them on the shoulder because they recognized an aspiring global citizen, someone whose leadership potential could be well-honed in an environment focused on diversity, sustainability, peace-building, and personal challenge.
UWC is committed to ensuring students are selected based on merit and potential and that financial means will not be a barrier to attending. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is a full scholarship for a student to attend Pearson College, as well as needs-based financial aid for other selected students.
Other quick facts:
Ø Lester B. Pearson – Pearson College UWC was created to honour the legacy of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Lester B. Pearson, a former prime minister of Canada, whose vision of peace and global cooperation inspired the founders of the school. Lester B. Pearson was recognized in 1957 for his vision in conceiving and creating the first UN multinational peacekeeping forces.
Ø Unique geographic and spiritual environment – Located on the mild west coast of Canada on the traditional territory of the Scia’new (Beecher Bay) First Nation, the campus’ forested and temperate coastal location encourages students to undertake challenging academic and experiential learning in both modern classrooms and outdoors year-round.
Ø Ecological Reserve – Pearson College UWC acts as the eco guardian for the world-renowned Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Students learn through marine sciences courses, diving activity and volunteering on the reserve.

Radhoc Youth Leadership [email protected] via gmail.com
Hi there,
We wanted to let you know about an excellent opportunity for your students! Radhoc Youth Leadership is hosting a camp on June 26th-30th at Memorial University. The camp is for students in grade nine to students leaving grade twelve. Radhoc is a for youth by youth organization that aims to educate high school students on local and global societal issues and leadership skills. We do this in the hope that they will be able to return to their schools and communities with the motivation and skills necessary to make a positive change in the world.
At camp, students can expect to participate in a wide variety of workshops, activities, and events geared toward leadership development and awareness of societal issues. Students will also have the opportunity to meet other students from many different localities and speak with local community leaders! Camp costs only $20, and this includes lodging and all meals for the duration of camp. If the $20 fee is a barrier to a student’s ability to apply to camp, we are happy to waive the fee for them! For students travelling from rural localities in Newfoundland and Labrador, we do have a budget for scholarships to assist with travel costs, but this is a limited amount. That being said, we do try our best to make camp accessible to everyone! Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to assist with travel from outside Newfoundland and Labrador, but happily accept applicants from elsewhere in Canada.
Our camp provides many students from outside of St.John’s an excellent opportunity to view Memorial Universities Campus!
We ask that you, please pass on this information to any students who may be interested.
Our application for summer camp can be found under programs on our website along with any other information at radhoc.ca. You can also check us out on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Attached below is our promotional poster. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have!

SHAD 2018-2019
Instagram Live Q&A: On October 18 at 7 PM EDT we will be doing a SHAD application Q&A on Instagram Live. Follow us on Instagram (@SHADprogram) to tune in and get the latest info on SHAD 2019.
The deadline to apply to SHAD 2019 is one month away! We hope to see promising students from your school (who are currently in grade 10, 11 or 12) applying to this opportunity to spend their July at a university campus and unleash their potential as Change Makers.
It can be tough for students to know where to begin with applying to SHAD, so let's debunk the misconceptions surrounding the SHAD application:
Myth 1: Students need to have an average in the high 90's
SHAD values curiosity over high academic grades. We are looking for students who love learning for the sake of learning, are open minded and creative. There is no grade average cut-off for eligibility - if a student loves to learn, encourage them to apply!
Myth 2: Students should only apply if they can afford the full program fee
A range of bursaries and scholarships are available to ensure SHAD is accessible to students from diverse economic backgrounds. Last year SHAD awarded over 1 million dollars in bursaries and scholarship for students with demonstrated financial need!
Myth 3: SHAD is a STEAM summer camp that only lasts a month
SHAD is a network for life and our SHAD alumni will gain access to benefits throughout their academic and professional careers. Participants receive the SHAD Fellow designation, which is recognized by university admissions and major scholarship providers. This is why our Fellow network of over 17,000 alumni features 32 Rhodes Scholars, 88 Loran Scholars, and 56 Schulich Leaders!
Myth 4: My students are from a rural & remote community and won't fit in
Many of our SHAD Fellows from remote communities say SHAD expanded their network. In their words:
"SHAD teaches that a small kid from outport Newfoundland, like myself, can have the same opportunities as a kid in downtown Toronto." - Hailey, SHAD Fellow
"Being a woman in STEM from a remote northern community, I've often experienced difficulty in obtaining access to educational programs and mentorship. SHAD stood out to me because it gave me the access I always dreamed of." - Emily, SHAD Fellow & Schulich Leader
What's next? Encourage, educate and empower your promising student leaders to apply to Canada's premier enrichment opportunity by November 19!
Thank you for all of your support.

Full details are available on our website at: https://kimberley-foundation.org/focus-video-competition/ . Fantastic prizes can be won ($5,000 for 1st prize, 3 honourable mentions each at $2,500) as well as a public screening of the winning films. Each school of the winning entry will also be awarded $2,500 towards art, science or library acquisitions. We hope some of your students might be inspired to enter. The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University has recently been made aware of a fantastic opportunity for schools across the country and we would like to see youth in Newfoundland and Labrador take part. This campaign called Make:Change is a contest that encourages classes to create an entry that shows how they can use STEM to improve their global community. The prize is a makerspace kit for the school which I am sure would be well-received. More details about this can be found on the official site, the link is below.

The program offers early intervention service through a distance-coaching approach, teaching skills to families of children and youth ages 3-17, whose behaviours cause stress at school or at home.
Strongest Families has been clinically recognized to improve parental mood and stress, increase school participation, and overcome bullying by increasing pro-social behaviours. This program offers online or telephone support and coaching to children, youth and their parents/guardians.
The program has the capacity to service approximately 400 families this year. Information can be found at www.strongestfamilies.com.
